The growth of entropically stabilized quasicrystals

چکیده
We introduce a growth model for entropically stabilized quasicrystals. The dominating feature of this model is a fluctuating growth front which enables growth near equlibrium with small phason components. We summarize the results obtained for 2D and give a first presentation of 3D calculations.

Stability of the decagonal quasicrystal in the Lennard-Jones-Gauss system
Although quasicrystals have been studied for 25 years, there are many open questions concerning their stability: What is the role of phason fluctuations? Do quasicrystals transform into periodic crystals at low temperature? If yes, by what mechanisms? We address these questions here for a simple two-dimensional model system, a monatomic decagonal quasicrystal, which is stabilized by the Lennard...
متن کاملSelf-assembly of soft-matter quasicrystals and their approximants.
The surprising recent discoveries of quasicrystals and their approximants in soft-matter systems poses the intriguing possibility that these structures can be realized in a broad range of nanoscale and microscale assemblies. It has been theorized that soft-matter quasicrystals and approximants are largely entropically stabilized, but the thermodynamic mechanism underlying their formation remain...
متن کاملQuasicrystallization by stochastic flips
Tilings are often used as a toy model for quasicrystals, with the ground states corresponding to the tilings satisfying some local properties (matching rules). In this context, a challenging problem is to provide a theory for quasicrystals growth. One of the proposed theories is the relaxation process. One assumes that the entropy of a tiling increases with the number of tilings which can be fo...
متن کاملQuasicrystals as cluster aggregates.
Quasicrystals are solids that exhibit symmetries long thought forbidden in nature. Since their discovery in a rapidly solidified Al-Mn alloy in 1984, the central issue in the field has been to understand why they form. Are they energetically stable compounds or stabilized by entropy? In recent years, major strides have been made in determining atomic structure, largely by direct imaging using a...
متن کاملFinite-temperature elasticity phase transition in decagonal quasicrystals.
We present evidence for a novel finite-temperature phase transition in the phason elasticity of quasicrystals. A tiling model for energetically stabilized decagonal quasicrystals has been studied in an extensive series of Monte Carlo simulation. Hamiltonian (energetics) of the model is given by nearestneighbor Penrose-like matching rules between three dimensional unit cells. A new order paramet...
